Glossary Of Terms
Here are a few commonly used scrapbooking terms that you might find in our instruction sheets. They may not be common to all scrapbookers, depending on their experience, and so we have listed them just incase you run into something that you are not sure of. We also invite you to contact us anytime that you find yourself in unfamiliar territory and you are not sure how to proceed.
Antiquing/ Distressing/ Aging - All of these terms refer to a technique that is most commonly used when you are trying to acheive an aged effect on a piece of paper. Most often, an ink pad especially designed for this technique is used. A distress ink pad is often smaller than a regular ink pad and is easily gripped in the hand, as opposed to an ink pad that is used for stamping. Distressing is also used when a little contrast is called for on a layout. Commonly used colors for this techique are shades of brown, grey and carmel ( when you are aiming at an aged effect) but can be almost any color when you are trying to acheive contrast. There are several methods that can be used when antiquing or distressing paper. Quite often, the ink pad is softly drawn along the edge of the paper, with a little extra rubbing in the corners to make the paper look old. If you are nervous about making a mistake, you can daub a sponge or one of Monday Night Class' specially designed aging tools across the top of the ink pad to lift a little ink off the pad and then drawn the sponge over the edges of your paper. It makes a very subtle application of ink. Either way, the effect is georgous!
Sanding - Sanding techniques are always used on papers that have a white centre or a white backing. The idea is to "lift" the color off of the edges of the paper and reveal the white core or backing, making the paper look old and providing yet another form of contrast. Sanding is acheived with scrapbooking sanding blocks ( see our Shop The Cupboard section), regular sandpaper of different grit or scrapbboking files designed for sanding tight corners or the inside edges of objects. You can sand as heavily or as lightly as you want, depending on your style. Cardstock is not usually a good choice for this technique, mostly due to the fact that most cardstocks are full color right through the entire paper and sanding would not reveal anything but more color.
Chalking - A special type of chalk is called upon for this technique ( see our Shop The Cupboard section). Scrapbokking chalk sets come in many different colors within one color pallette and provide subtle aging qualities to your project. A eyeshadow makeup tool is all you need to lift a little color off of the chalk and in a soft and gentle motion, blend it onto the edges of your paper. If the project is allowed to sit out for several hours, the chalk will "absorb" into the paper and will not require any setting medium to affix it to the page.
Painting - The technique of painting on your page opens a whole new world of possibilities when making effective scrapbook pages. Scrapbook paint is manufactured by several different companies, namely Making Memories, Heidi Swapp and Scrapbook Sally. We recommend checking the label for an acid free rating if you are using any other brand. In most cases, paint is applied directly onto the cardstock or chipboard using a foam brush or any good artists brush. You can apply paint to a brush, draw it back and forth on a scrap piece of paper or paper towel to get most of the paint off and then lightly brush over the cardstock. This is called "dry brushing" and is used when you want a very subtle effect.
These are just a few of the techniques that you will find used in our Monday Night Class kits to acheive contrast, texture and effect. We hope that you enjoy learning and exploring these techiques on your way to exciting scrapbook pages!
